In an afternoon filled with dramatization and debate, Scotland’s rich store of poetry, prose, and thought is explored. Following a performance, several leading Scottish authors discuss the role literature plays in creating and enhancing the identities of great cities. The panel includes Catherine Lockerbie, director, Edinburgh International Book Festival; Alexander McCall Smith, author of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series; and Neal Ascherson, internationally renowned political journalist and author of Stone  Voices: The Search for Scotland.

Alexander McCall Smith is well-known for his No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series of books that are filled with heart-warming tales of detective Mma Precious Ramotswe that take one right into the landscape of Botswana. In an engaging interview with ABC-7’s News co-anchor Kathleen Matthews, he offers up his thoughts on life, work, and having fun and talks about his sources of inspiration as a writer. Several of McCall Smith’s books are available for signing after the program.

In a delightful, cabaret style show Liz Lochhead, Glasgow’s Poet Laureate, and Michael Marra, Scotland’s leading singer/songwriter, present a brilliant evening of music, poetry, comic monologue, and song. By turns poignant and outrageously funny, they create a lovingly observed roving gallery of captivating Scottish characters talking about life, death, love—and football.

Battlefield Band: Forward with Scotland’s Past

Battlefield Band easily marries passion, energy and joy with the rich heritage of Scottish traditional music. On the stage the synthesizer and guitar harmonizes beautifully with the fiddle, flute and bagpipes into a musical bouquet. The band is “poetry in motion” and winner of 'Best Live Act' at the inaugural Scots Traditional Music Awards 2003.

U.S. Representatives McIntyre and Duncan, co-chairs of the Caucus, will make brief comments. Luncheon will be served in Rayburn B-338. For supporters and by invitation only.

National Capital Tartan Day Committee (NCTDC) members will host a reception in honor of National Tartan Day and to celebrate the creation of the Congressional Friends of Scotland Caucus. The reception will include brief remarks by U.S. Representatives McIntyre and Duncan, co-chairs of the Caucus, Mr. Tom McCabe, Scottish Finance Minister, and Mr. George Reid, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament. Entertainment will be provided by Scottish fiddler Andrew Dodds. Refreshments will include soft drinks, beer, wine, Scottish whisky, and hors d'oeuvres. For supporters and by invitation only.
